The Science How It Works Features FAQ Get Notified

You check your phone 96 times a day

How many of those were intentional? PauseMate creates a gentle, science-backed pause before your most distracting apps open.

A pause before app-opening cut visits by up to 47% — CHI 2019
Pause and reflect
Take a moment — or choose to continue.
This isn't about willpower.
It's about how your brain works.

Decades of behavioural research show that a brief pause at the right moment changes everything. PauseMate is built on that research.

47%

fewer app opens with escalating friction

An interstitial pause screen before app opening reduced visits by 13% at low friction, 27% at medium, and 47% at high — mirroring PauseMate's escalating nudge design.

Kim, Park, Lee, Ko & Lee, 2019. ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. KAIST.
71%

followed through with a specific pause plan

People who set a concrete "when X happens, I will do Y" plan completed their goal 71% of the time — compared to 32% who simply intended to do it.

Gollwitzer & Brandstätter, 1997. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.
The "willpower is a muscle" theory was tested across 23 labs and 2,141 participants. It failed. PauseMate doesn't rely on willpower — it builds a system.
Hagger et al., 2016. Perspectives on Psychological Science.
Three nudges. Escalating friction.

When you reach for a distracting app, PauseMate interrupts the habit loop. Nudges get deeper with each re-open within an hour.

1

Breathe

A guided breathing exercise with visual and haptic feedback. Complete one cycle — the impulse often passes on its own.

A focused breathing exercise reduces emotional reactivity — Arch & Craske, 2006
2

Reflect

A short question: why are you reaching for this app right now? Builds self-awareness without self-judgement.

Reappraisal outperforms suppression for regulating emotions — Gross, 2002
3

Wait

A timed delay. 15 to 45 seconds of stillness. Enough time for the autopilot to release and your intention to surface.

Escalating friction reduced app visits by up to 47% — Kim et al., CHI 2019
Complete any nudge and the app unlocks. You're always in control.
Mindful by design

Every feature respects your autonomy while building better habits.

Focus Sessions

When you want zero temptation, choose to fully block apps for 25, 50, or 90 minutes. Your boundary, on your terms.

Weekly Attention Audit

A 7-day summary of app opens, pauses completed, and bypass patterns. Insights, not guilt trips.

Mindfulness Streaks

Track consecutive days of completing nudges. Gentle motivation that rewards presence, not punishment.

Intent Capture

When you bypass a nudge, capture your reason. Over time, patterns reveal which habits need the most attention.

★★★★★
"I've tried Screen Time, One Sec, Cold Turkey — they all felt punishing. PauseMate is the first one that doesn't make me feel like I'm fighting myself."

Questions
Screen Time blocks apps after a time limit — and you tap "Ignore" every time. PauseMate takes a different approach: it creates a mindful moment before you open the app, so you notice the habit and make a conscious choice. When you do want hard blocking (study sessions, work hours), Focus Sessions give you that — but it's always your decision to turn it on.
By default, no. Nudges create a pause — once you complete one, the app unlocks and you choose what to do next. You're always in control. But when you want hard blocking — a study session, work hours, bedtime — you can opt into Focus Sessions, which fully block apps for a set period. The difference: you set the boundary, not us.
Yes. The core mechanism — a friction screen before app opening — was tested in a 2019 field experiment at KAIST, published at ACM CHI (the top human-computer interaction conference). Escalating friction levels reduced app visits by up to 47%. The habit science draws on peer-reviewed research from NYU and UCL. We cite journal papers, not wellness blogs.
Everything stays on your device. We don't have servers, analytics, or user accounts. Your nudge history, reflections, and focus sessions are stored locally and nowhere else.
